Colton Lear

Shands now has the "Pediatric Brain Tumor Program" headed by Colton's oncologist Dr. Amy Smith.

Rhabdoid research is as rare as the diagnosis, only 1-2 percent of pediatric brain tumors are Rhabdoids. Through much effort Shands at the University of Florida has developed The Pediatric Brain Tumor Program which will focous on Rhabdoid as well as other childhhood/infant brain tumors.

If you would like to help find a cure, please send checks payable to The Pediatric Brain Tumor Program, "Colton's Cause" to:

Colton Camburn Lear was born October 29, 2001 in Gainesville, Florida and passed away July 29, 2005 at the age of 4. Colton left an older sister, named Cassidy, 2 dogs, 4 horses and 1 cat. He liked to ride his tractor, ride his horse Jasmine, and play with his sister. Colton and his daddy liked to ride in the Jeep with the top down and listen to music. I can say that John and I were truly blessed with an amazing little boy.

When It All Started

In June of 2003 we returned from a family vacation and Colton seemed unusually tired. On June 9th, after three days of doctor visits with no results, we were admitted to Shands of Gainesville with Colton virtually comatose. We discovered after a CT scan that Colton had a mass, hydrocephalus, and a bleed on the brain. His heart rate was at 52 (normal is around 110). Just to think 1 week earlier we were in Panama City, playing in the surf and building sandcastles. Colton had no nausea, did not fall down, virtually no symptoms other than being tired, which escalated rapidly within a 4 day period.

His tumor had wrapped around his brain stem and the doctors said that he may need a tracheostomy and he may not be able to talk or even swallow. After a 6 hour surgery we learned that Colton’s tumor, an Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid, was extremely rare and we were told it would more than likely take his life. We were then told that chemo does not typically work and it was our decision on which way to proceed. I was angry, I was numb, I remember laying on the bathroom floor of the PICU and crying and screaming until I became physically ill. Then I went back to my baby and I began to pray.

Psalms 118.8 "It is better to take refuge in the Lord than trust man"

Two rounds of "ICE" chemo, Two rounds of "VRD" chemo, Three rounds of "Highdose" chemo, each followed by stem cell transplants and last but not least 5 weeks twice a day of radiation and Colton is in remission. All through this, the doctors reminding us that he will not likely survive. By the grace of God, our little boy talks, swallows, walks, runs, goes to church, rides his tractor and still annoys his sister.

My advice is to keep your sense of humor, always love like there is no tomorrow, and trust in God.
